Priorities
"Everything is permissible for me—but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible for me— but I will not be mastered by anything." I Corinthians 6:12
Have you ever examined your priorities? I'm not talking about spouting the Christian answer that you have memorized and that tends to impress people (God is first, my family is second, etc.) I mean, have you ever really looked deep inside yourself?
I have. And to be honest, sometimes I don’t like what I discover. I have come to realize that my priorities fluctuate more than I would like.
Sometimes my priority is to make money and have nice things. Sometimes, I care more about having a great social life, or having as much fun as possible. Many times my priorities are based on my comfort, my image, or my goals.
Although I am not perfect in this area, or in any area for that matter, I have decided to pay close attention. To discover where my heart is and where my priorities lie, I have started to observe where I spend my time. And, I take notice of what I truly care about.
Since I started doing this, I have come to realize that this is a focal point of attack for the enemy of my soul. If I spend so much time investing in things that are good, but not the best (entertainment, leisure, social life), I won't have any time left to do what I consider to be my priority. Thus, my faith suffers. To ensure that doesn’t happen, I have come to a few conclusions.
My priorities will not choose me.
Whether it be a nation, a generation, your neighborhood, or your family, God is waiting for you to ask Him to use you specifically. You are part of His plan to let others know that He is the answer to life’s meaningful questions. Don’t let laziness or fear keep you from being used.
Are you ready for an honest exercise? Make a list of your top three priorities, as you want them to be, and write the amount of time that you spend pursuing them on a weekly basis. Now make a list of the three areas where you spend most of your time, and take note of how many hours per week you spend on those pursuits. This should give you some interesting things to talk with God about.
